🏡 When history knocked on my front door

One of the things I love most about living in regional NSW is the sense of place — the history, 
the stories, the people.

And last month, we had a story come walking right up our driveway.

Our home in Mudgee was built in 1856. It’s a beautiful old heritage property, and over the years, 
my husband and I have done our best to piece together its past— collecting old photos from previous owners and documents from the historical society.

But nothing could have prepared us for the phone call I received recently from our real estate agent:

"I have a bit of a strange request…"

She explained that a woman named Chris had been in touch. Her grandparents had owned the house 
before 1920, and she was actually born in the house in 1947.

My immediate response?

“When is she coming to visit?!”

Which, funnily enough, was exactly what Chris was hoping for.

I gave her a call and it was a full-body yes — and if you’ve ever been to one of my Business Uncorked Dinners, you’ll know I’m no stranger to having strangers in my home.

So we arranged for her and her girlfriends to pop in while they were visiting Mudgee.

The sun was shining. I baked scones. They arrived at 3.30pm.

And for the next two hours, we sat together over tea, laughing and listening to stories about this house 
I’d never heard before.

Chris told us how the rooms were used when she was a child.
She finally walked through the front door for the first time (kids weren’t allowed to use it back then!).
She looked at the tassel pull-down light switches with such fondness.

She even brought us a selection of printed photos to keep — and a framed picture of the house from when her grandparents owned it.

Honestly, the joy on her face was everything.
And we both loved every minute of it.

This is what I live for — real stories, genuine connection, and the absolute magic that happens when people come together.

It’s amazing what happens when you open your doors and say yes.
