Do you know how long people are watching video each day?

entrepreneurship Nov 18, 2021

I want you to think about something for me - how much time do you think you spent watching videos yesterday?

You see, today I read this stat that blew my mind and at the same time had me nodding along thinking “well yeah… I’ve been preaching this for years now”.

The stat was -
as of 2021, an average person is predicted to spend 100 minutes per day watching online videos. Hold the phone, 100 minutes!! The mind-blowing part was the amount of time but as I thought about it - it really stopped being shocking.

⏰ I spent time yesterday looking at Instagram Stories, most of which is video.

⏰ My video podcast with the effervescent Donna McGeorge went live yesterday (cheeky plug 😉) so I checked in on that across the socials and YouTube. More time spent watching video…

⏰ I visited websites that had videos on their homepage… even more time spent watching video.

⏰ I scrolled through LinkedIn for a hot minute only to see a number of videos… more time…

With the exception of not having a podcast go live each and every day, this behaviour isn’t out of the ordinary for me. In fact, I probably watch more than the average person because I’m dealing with video every day for clients.

However, my point is this. If you consider that most people are getting 8 hours of sleep per night, that means that one TENTH of someone’s day is watching video!! A WHOLE TENTH.

Do you have a slice of that pie? Are you regularly creating video to ensure you’re meeting your customers and potential clients' consumption needs?

I know there is a temptation to think “sure, Becca would absolutely push video because it’s her business” and you’d be right - but it’s more than that. The data is there. I’ve only given you ONE statistic and there are hundreds. Google for yourself YouTube watch-time averages or how much time is spent on average on TikTok each day (a 100% video platform).

Then there’s a multitude of statistics around consumers and professionals WANTING more video content specifically from businesses and brands.

I’m not selling you anything in this blog (I can’t in 2021 anyway because we’re entirely booked!). I just want you to be informed so that you understand the importance of creating video and you can take the plunge if it’s something you’re on the fence about.

Make 2022 the year you put yourself, your business or your brand on the screen.

Remember, small screens have a big impact!
