Networking and connecting with others is one of the most intimidating tasks we do as business owners. Gone are the days of scatter gunning and spreading superficial connections through business cards or networking events. If you want to build a powerful network with people who’ll champion, teach, motivate and inspire you - you have to approach it differently.

In this episode, I’m so excited to be chatting with my very own mentor, Janine Garner. Janine is the absolute oracle of networking, communications and connections. She arrived in Australia from the UK without a job or any connections and over 20 years rebuilt her career, life and network through deeper connections.

Janine never goes to networking events! She has built her business through nurturing relationships and has developed strategies that work time and time again. She condensed her networking expertise into her 2nd book ‘It’s Who You Know’ and she’ll share it with you today.

We explore how she networks publicly and within corporations by investing the time to reach out with intent and categorising people into 4 groups: the promotor, the pit crew, the teacher and the butt-kicker.

Janine is a wealth of knowledge and experience. I’m so grateful to have her on the show today to share her proven strategies that have achieved tremendous results in building powerful networks.

Topics discussed:

[1:20]: Janine shares why networking and connection are important. She talks about arriving in Australia without a job after leaving her corporate career in the UK.

[3:25]: Over the last 20 years, Janine has rebuilt her career, life and network through the power of connecting with people and who you know.

[4:05]: Janine’s 2nd book “It’s Who You Know”.

[5:42]: The depth of connection is how Janine networks differently. To connect at a deeper level takes confidence, vulnerability and being genuine.

[7:30]: Networking and connection are all about mutual trust, resilience in the relationships and partnerships, and growing together. Ask ‘how can I help you first?’

[9:00]: In Janine’s book ‘It’s Who You Know’, she discusses the 4 groups of people that we meet: the promotor, the pit crew, the teacher and the butt-kicker.

[10:24]: 80% of your revenue will always come from 20% of your clients. Janine overlays the groups onto each of her clients that sit in the 20% and provides an example of each group.

[13:23]: Janine provides an example of one of her clients to display how it all works.

[16:33]: People often network superficially and scattergun because they’re not confident to show the entirety of themselves.

[18:17]: By Janine stepping into her power and being real, she’s inviting everyone around her to do the same.

[19:39]: The only way you’ll find the right clients is by being yourself. Some people won’t like you and will disagree with you but that’s okay - they’re not in flow.

[21:27]: Creating impact doesn’t happen overnight. You have to do the work and connect on a real level with people.

[24:03]: The people that are around you when you’re facing challenges and obstacles are really powerful in the long term.

[25:15]: Janine talks about networking and building connections online. You can connect and build a network online by upskilling with technology and reaching out with intent and purpose.

[28:58]: Our world will never be the same, it’s always moving forward. You will have to change how you do things.

[31:34]: Janine teaches her expertise and skills in her programs - Elevate Mastermind Program and Inner Circle Mastermind Group.
