EPISODE 14

Crafting Camera Confidence

Does the idea of standing and presenting in front of a camera terrify you?

Have you ever wondered how the wonderful people on TV manage it with such ease and authenticity?

In today’s episode, I’m chatting with the remarkable Shelly Horton. Shelly is a journalist for Channel 9 and 9Honey, an incredible MC, and an inspiring presentation and media trainer. Her career began on ABC radio working as a crime reporter before becoming an entertainment presenter in London on Channel One. She’s sharing her amazing journey with you today with openness and humour.

Shelly has become an ambassador for women’s issues that are socially considered taboo. She hosts her own podcast with Dr Ginni Mansberg called “Things you can’t talk about on TV” where they discuss everything from semen to periods. She’s made it her goal to help bring these conversations to the forefront and encourage people to feel comfortable.

To help you develop your on-camera skills, Shelly has used her knowledge and experience to create a range of courses that help you to build your on-camera presence, presentation skills and self-confidence. Shelly discusses what the courses entail and how she loves working one-on-one with people to ensure they’re ready for the lens. You can benefit from her expertise by heading over to her website and checking them out.

I could’ve chatted to Shelly for hours! I know you’ll enjoy listening to this episode as much as I enjoyed bringing it to you.

Topics discussed:

[1:53]: Shelly studied a double major in broadcast journalism that included radio and television. She began her career in ABC radio as a crime reporter - she’s seen 7 dead bodies! But she always wanted to work on TV but didn’t have the self confidence.

[3:28]: When she was in London she got her first break in TV on Channel One. The sport’s presenter lost his voice and Shelly bravely stepped in for him with a ‘fake it until you make it’ bravado and made 4 mistakes in 5 minutes.

[6:30]: The CEO then called her into his office and told her she had the ‘IT’ factor and gave her her own entertainment show.

[9:04]: Shelly is a public ambassador for women’s issues that are socially considered taboo.

[9:28]: Shelly is childfree by choice and when she first spoke about it she received an intense backlash from the public. But amongst the terrible messages were beautiful stories of support from women.

[11:30]: Shelly loves weird medical stories. She has a podcast on Audible with Dr Ginni Mansberg called ‘Things you can’t talk about on TV’. They discuss everything from semen to periods to an entire episode on farts.

[12:47]: Shelly discusses her journey with perimenopause and how the taboo surrounding this topic led her to not seeking help earlier. She hopes that by talking about these taboo topics, she will help others find help and support.

[16:54]: Shelly advises how it’s important to practice public speaking in private first. You can then record and publish them in stories so they’re not out there forever. The more you do the better you’ll get.

[17:47]: Shelly provides a course that takes your presenting skills to the next level.

[18:42]: I discuss it within my course frequently, don’t compare yourself to someone presenting for 10 years when it’s your day 1.

[19:35]: Don’t ‘hate-follow’. Don’t follow someone you don’t like but you feel are good at what they do. This leads to feelings of jealousy and emptiness.

[21:14]: Shelly shares how her camera training takes away the fear. It’s a four hour one-on-one course that involves the tips and tricks of being on camera and the psychology behind preparation. Don’t ever wing it. She also includes mock interviews that put participants on the spot as if it’s live TV.

[25:43]: Where to find Shelly.
