EPISODE 13

Stepping out of your comfort zone in the name of business growth

I’m talking today with Jess Pongrass, Co-owner of Baby Village, a beautiful store for all things baby and parenting. Seeing the opportunity to expand her reach through virtual content, Jess has become a video pro and joins me today to talk about her experience creating regular, high quality video content for her business.

In this episode, Jess and I talk about how creating video content has helped Baby Village build a deeper connection with their customers, build brand credibility and provide evergreen content to new and old customers for years to come.

We talk about how Jess stepped outside her comfort zone to begin filming video content, how she schedules her filming, the organisation required, and what she has learned through the process. We also chat about how Jess managed to launch a new store and pull off a very successful virtual expo in the middle of covid!

Baby Village is yet another example of the power that video content has to build genuine connection, broaden brand awareness and drive a business forward.

Topics discussed:

[1:15]: Baby Village is a place where parents learn about everything they will need to set themselves up for the journey of parenthood.

[2:10]: Jess talks about how her and her husband, Nathan, got started in the business and how the online space has been a brilliant opportunity to provide support to even more people.

[3:40]: Jess and Nathan make a good team and have a complementary skillset. Before going into the business, they worked out the roles and responsibilities they’d each play. Jess talks about how they manage the work/life balance.

[5:15]: Jess talks about having the drive to make the business better.

[6:30]: After having her son, Jess felt more connected to how her customers would feel and wanted to give more insight to more people. This led to the decision to start a blog, video content and her being the face of the company.

[7:50]: Jess talks about the work required to create the video content and how her search for efficiency led her to Rebecca. She wanted her content to replicate someone being in the store.

[9:20]: Jess previously used a teleprompter but now her content is more natural. She talks about her journey understanding lighting and everything involved and that it’s taken a lot of practise.

[10:45]: Jess schedules her filming in line with product releases and batches her B-roll footage. It’s also important to schedule back up days in case of bad weather and makes sure everything is organised.

[12:00]: Jess talks about how her video content has helped her customers make purchasing decisions and given their brand credibility.

[14:00]: Responding to comments and questions on social media is essential in developing engagement with your customers. You’re not just creating content for local people but it can be accessed by anyone around the world.

[16:50]: Jess talks about her store and how it functions to showcase the products clearly. She also talks about working with suppliers to review products.

[19:20]: Jess talks about building a brand new store in the middle of covid and how her team rallied together to make things work.

[21:15]: Jess talks about navigating the virtual expo and how her motivation was to bring the content to people because they couldn’t come to them during lockdown. It was a big undertaking but the feedback was unbelievable.

[25:20]: Jess shares her one piece of advice for video. It gives credibility and connectedness because you can show how authentically you stand behind your products.
